This secret military complex, located in the Cannerberg near Maastricht, played a crucial role in the defence of Western Europe. It served as a Joint Operations Centre and was used as a training and war command centre. The Cold War is still tangibly present here. Here, troop movements were coordinated and strategic decisions taken in case of a possible attack. In 1992, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, NATO left the complex.

A refuge during the Cold War
After World War II, the Cold War became a period of tension between the West and the Soviet Union. As a NATO member, the Netherlands was part of the defence against a possible attack from the East. The NATO bunker Maastricht was commissioned in 1954 and had been under the State Secrets Act since 1956. This meant that the complex was not open to the public and even its location remained strictly secret.
Inside the underground corridors, hundreds of military personnel and communications experts worked. The bunker was equipped with the most modern technologies of the time and functioned as an important communication centre for NATO.
Layout NATO Headquarters Maastricht
Built in a former marl quarry, the NATO headquarters in Cannerberg consists of a huge network of underground corridors. To add structure to this maze-like environment, the central corridor was named Main Street. From there, side corridors ran counterclockwise, named after the NATO alphabet: from Alpha Street to Golf Street. The offices in these corridors were numbered from Main Street, ascending each corridor.
Facilities former NATO Headquarters
The headquarters was fully self-sufficient and equipped to remain operational for long periods of time. Some impressive features were:
- Constant 18°C through heating and air-conditioning system.
- Own water supply and emergency generators on marine diesel engines.
- Overpressure in the mountain to keep out nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) substances.
- Secure access doors and explosion-proof corridors.
- Extensive facilities: up to 50 metres deep, 8 km of corridors, 400 offices, 2 restaurants, a hair salon and even a 2-hole golf course.
This gigantic complex was designed to remain completely self-sufficient in times of crisis.

By foot:
About 40 minutes' walk from the Maastricht Underground Ticketshop and about 1 hour from the Maastricht Store (Kleine Staat 1, Maastricht). It is recommended to use a map or navigation. Attention! Walk the route via Mergelweg.
Public transport: easy to reach. Plan your trip with public transport.
Car:
The former NATO headquarters is easily accessible. There is plenty of parking space on the Von Dopfflaan. Should this car park be full, you can drive on to the Village of Kanne, from there you can walk in about 10 minutes to the entrance via the footpath of Château Neercanne (from the car park towards Huis Poswick, then on Muizenberg turn right to the path towards Château Neercanne/vm NATO Headquarters).
Touring car:
The touring car can stop on the Cannerweg/von Dopfflaan to get in and out. There is no parking for a touring car. From the Cannerweg/von Dopfflaan, it is still about 5 minutes uphill towards the entrance. See coach parking Maastricht and other coach boarding and alighting locations.
