A marl quarry full of history
What makes the Bonsdal quarry so special is the multitude of stories that take place here. The quarry was originally dug to extract marl, the soft yellow limestone typical of southern Limburg. This marl has been used as a building material for churches, monasteries and castles since the Middle Ages. During your visit, you can still see the traces of block breakers making their way through the underground passages with saws and hammers. Those slanting lines on the wall? Each line tells the story of a marl block once brought to the surface.
From building stone to war industry
The Bonsdalgroeve took on a completely different function during World War II. As Allied bombing increased, the Germans sought bomb-proof sites to house their war industry. The Bonsdal quarry was converted into an underground factory where BMW aircraft engines were overhauled. As many as 2,500 forced labourers were used in the creation of the factory. Although the factory was almost finished, it was never fully commissioned. During the tour, you walk through the wide corridors where engines were once transported on narrow gauge rails. You will see remnants of workstations, narrow-gauge rails and climate control systems, among other things. You literally get an insight into the hidden history.

An experienced guide will take you through this underground world in about an hour and a half. You will hear about the prehistoric origins of the marlstone, the hard life of the quarry workers, and the mysterious war years when the quarry was temporarily used as a secret factory. You will visit, among other things, the original entrance bunker and get an impression of the former production lines and narrow-gauge tracks. Along the way, you will see traces of the past.

Thanks to its central location, a visit to the Bonsdalgroeve can easily be combined with lunch or dinner at one of the cosy catering establishments nearby, or with a nice walk through the picturesque Geul valley. Campsites and holiday parks are also within walking distance. Highly recommended is the nearby Curfsgroeve, also managed by Het Limburgs Landschap. This former opencast quarry forms a fascinating contrast to the underground Bonsdalgroeve. You can hike, enjoy panoramic views from viewing platforms and participate in excursions. A place of peace and nature
The Bonsdalgroeve is owned and managed with care by the Limburg Landscape Foundation. Each year, the quarry is only open to the public for a few months. From 1 October to mid-May, peace returns and the quarry becomes the domain of hibernating bats. This unique seasonal closure underlines the special balance between cultural history and nature conservation.

For whom is this cave tour near Valkenburg suitable?
The tour is suitable for anyone with a normal level of fitness. Please note that the temperature in the quarry is constant (around 11 degrees), so a jumper or jacket is recommended. Good walking shoes are also a must: the ground can be uneven.
