A guided tour through the Zonneberg Caves is an experience. You literally step into another—underground—world. An impressive experience: you walk through an ancient tropical sea. The walls, built up from the skeletons of life from this old subtropical sea, tell the story of how it was 70 million years ago.
Our guide shares special stories, shows how flint works, and teaches you to rely on your senses in the dark. Along the way, you see beautiful charcoal drawings, often made hundreds of years ago.
Zonneberg Caves Guided Tour – Secondary Education
Among experts, this cave is perhaps one of the most beautiful and authentic in Limburg. You go exploring in the Sint Pietersberg, where a labyrinth of over 8,000 corridors lies hidden. Through the high, cathedral-like corridors, you enter a hidden world full of endless stories. You walk here through an ancient tropical sea. This place is famous for the discovery of the Mosasaurus, which changed the worldview and influenced evolutionary thinking. The walls tell the story of how it was 70 million years ago. The mining past—the quarrying of marl by the block breakers—is also clearly visible here. Around 1900, tourism became important, and you can see that in the colorful, often hundred-year-old advertising inscriptions; small works of art. And we haven’t even mentioned the replica of Rembrandt’s Night Watch, created around 1900*. Also during World War II, this cave played an important role as a shelter and was equipped for 25,000 people, including chapels, a bakery, and a hospital.

Guided Tour Former NATO Headquarters for Secondary Education
After World War II, a new period of tensions began: the Cold War. The Soviet Union and the United States faced each other in a power struggle, but without actually fighting. To protect each other, various countries founded NATO: a defense organization in which members help one another if one is attacked. In 1954, the Cannerberg was converted into an important NATO communication center. From 1963 onward, military personnel worked here day and night. Underground, a complete “village” was set up: bars, a barber, a restaurant, a small golf course, a fire station, a medical post, and as many as 400 offices. The most important part was the bunker, the “Restricted Area,” the wartime headquarters where all air traffic movements in the region were monitored.
When NATO left, the complex was largely cleared and cleaned due to asbestos. During a guided tour through the impressive remains, our guide takes you back in time. You not only see the traces of this secret headquarters but also hear the special stories that bring the history of the Cannerberg fully to life again.
