This once ultra-secret underground complex is hidden deep in the hills on the outskirts of Maastricht, right on the border with Belgium. From 1954 to 1992, this complex served as a crucial NATO headquarters where air defense and military operations for a large part of North-West Europe were coordinated in the utmost secrecy. After its closure in 1992, it was thoroughly remediated due to asbestos contamination. This was done rigorously, which meant the complex was largely stripped and cleared out at the time.
What you see today are mainly the imposing remnants of the original marl tunnels and spaces. Little remains of the original bunker furnishings and furniture. However, over the years, various Cold War interior elements have been reintroduced. Despite the remediation, the unique and raw atmosphere of this once-so-secret location is still clearly palpable. During the guided tour, an enthusiastic guide will take you through the deserted, impressive corridors, sharing historical stories and fascinating details that only recently became part of the past, bringing this location fully back to life.
Do not expect an intact bunker, but a unique and impressive underground bunker complex , in terms of size and stories.
